This is messy: Hitomi Soga, kidnapped in Japan by North Korea two decades ago Korea, was recently permitted to visit Japan. She now wants to return home to her husband and children so that they can together discuss where to live—but the Japanese government won’t let her, saying that she’s been brainwashed. To make things even more complicated, Soga’s husband is an American, Charles Jenkins, a US Army deserter who defected to North Korea in 1965.
